We think, “They have changed,” when in reality they are still the same person we met “x” number of months ago. Rather, we are the ones who have changed. We have finally taken off the rose colored glasses and are able to see, with clarity, the reality of the person for the first time.
Emotion is a funny thing.
When we are infatuated with someone…or we simply just really like someone…we ignore all the red warning lights showing us the entire spectrum of who they are as a complete human being.
The same thing goes for people we don’t like very much…or people we are very angry with. We tend to ignore all the green lights that indicate their positive (good) traits because we are really invested in not liking them.
As my dad always said, it is very easy to build a case FOR or AGAINST anyone at any time. (Just ask any lawyer!)
Even though emotion colors how we interpret people’s words and behaviors, it is important to remember that a human being is not a buffet that allows us to pick & choose the traits we like and ignore the traits we don’t like. (Or by the same token, pick the traits we don’t like and ignore the traits we do like)
Humans are not absolute creatures. They are not black or white or good or bad….they are many shades of grey.
It is important to accept people for who they are as a complete human being….both the good and the bad…and move forward from there.
