The Paperweight

A former co-worker of mine kept an unusual paperweight on her desk.

It was an expended bullet suspended in a heavy acrylic dome. If you flipped the paperweight over, there was an inscription on the bottom that said, "one shot. one kill."

After I got to know her better, I asked what the story was behind the paperweight. She said the paperweight was a gift. And that the bullet was retrieved from the site of a specific mission. (She never elaborated the what, when or why of "the mission")

She kept it on her desk as a constant reminder that one person can make a difference….but not necessarily for the better. And that it is important to choose your battles carefully.

You don’t want to win a battle only to lose the war.

To paraphrase my favorite Vorlon, “The truth is a three edged sword.”
